Horses Set for Queen’s Plate At Woodbine Racetrack

A field of 15 horses is set to break from the starting gate this Sunday, July 6th, for the 155th running of the $1,000,000 Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke, Ontario (Canada). North America’s longest continuously run stakes race is Canada’s very own Kentucky Derby; stretching 1¼ mile and open to 3-yr-old thoroughbreds foaled in Canada, it serves as the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Similar to the American Triple Crown, races are run at distances of 1¼ mile – Queen’s Plate, 1-3/16 mile – Prince of Wales Stakes, and 1½ mile – Breeders Stakes, but differ quite drastically from their American counterparts, where all distances are run on dirt; Canadian horses must reign supreme over three different surfaces (polytrack, dirt and turf – respectively) if they plan to win all three jewels and join the nation’s immortals.
