The National Sporting Library and Museum

By: Sarah A. MacLellan

Founded in 1954 by George L. Ohrstrom, Sr. and Alexander Mackay-Smith, the National Sporting Library and Museum remains a classic Middleburg attraction to this day. Their mission is to “preserve, promote and share the literature, art and culture of equestrian, angling and field sports”, as well as they facilitate happenings such as exhibitions, lectures, seminars, publications and special events.

The museum building of the NSLM is an historic building and the books found in the library date from the 16th-21st centuries. Both the library and museum are open to the public and offer great exposure to the equestrian world – from literature to art, this is the place to go not only for research, but for inspiration as well.

The library is warm and very welcoming. As you walk up and down the aisles of books you will see such a variety from Jackie O., a Middleburg equestrian, to books on polo, dressage, fox hunting and much more. There are equestrian statues and exhibits on display throughout the library as well as seating areas. Also found in the library building is the Founders’ Room, which hosts readings and other public events.

The museum is absolutely stunning. When you first enter, there is a large horse head statue, a very unique and prominent piece. The library is three stories high and has some permanent paintings and photographs as well as ever-changing pieces that can only be viewed for a limited time.

The National Sporting Library and Museum hosts events throughout the year that bring fellow equestrian enthusiasts together. A very successful event is their annual Polo Benefit & Brunch, where top women polo players from around the world come together for a match on the grounds of VIP, Virginia International Polo (located in Upperville, Virginia). This event is a “must attend” event whether you’re sponsoring a table, or joining on the side of tailgating, you’re certain to have a remarkable time socializing with friends and fellow horse lovers.

As a native to Middleburg, I can truly say The National Sporting Library and Museum is a prestigious non-profit and integral part to the Middleburg and equestrian community. Both the library and museum building are landmarks to many and recognized for their statue on their campus commemorating horses lost at war.
