California Chrome’s Sister Looks Hopeful In Debut

Hope’s Love Shows Signs of Promising Future

It’s nearly impossible to see the iconic DAP Racing silks and not feel a twinge of nostalgia for the 2014 Triple Crown campaign of California Chrome. While it has been announced that Chrome will no longer be running in Royal Ascot’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes on June 17, his 2-year-old full sister Hope’s Love is carrying the purple and green torch back here in the States.

The chestnut filly with a stripe, trained by Art Sherman’s son Steve and owned by Perry Martin and Steven Coburn, made an excellent debut in a 4 ½ furlong maiden special weight sprint at Golden Gate Field on June 13 – coming in second by a neck under jockey Ricardo Gonzalez. After breaking from the gate slowly, Hope’s Love ran sixth for the first three furlongs before making a strong late charge in the homestretch. In the final furlong, she lost some momentum maneuvering around traffic but rallied to nearly catch the winner, Ourprincessmelanie.

Showing closing speed and a running style reminiscent of her older brother, Hope’s Love did not disappoint racing fans. After the rough race, Sherman reported the filly lost a shoe and grabbed a quarter – which shows Hope’s Love is a tough competitor. Although she did not win in her debut, Hope’s Love is a young filly with a bright future. If the race had been slightly longer she likely would have emerged victorious.

With Chrome likely to retire from racing at the end of the year, Hope’s Love can continue to give Chromies a horse to adore.
