Nashua (USA)
Jan. 1, 1952 – Feb. 3, 1982
(Nasrullah – Segula, by Johnstown)
Bred by Belaire Stud in Bowie, Maryland, Nashua was sired by European Champion Nasrullah. As a two-year-old, Nashua raced 8 times, winning 6, finishing second twice, capping off his 1954 campaign with Champion Two-Year-Old honors. His Road to the Kentucky Derby included wins in the Florida Derby and Wood Memorial before ultimately finishing second to Swaps on the first Saturday in May. Despite that loss, he went on to capture both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and was named Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and United States Horse of the Year.
Following the death of William Woodward Jr., Nashua sold for a record $1,252,200 to a syndicate whose members included John Wesley Hanes II, the head of the New York Racing Association, Under Secretary of the Treasury in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration, and part owner in the company that made Hanes underwear.
He entered stud at Spendthrift Farm as the second thoroughbred to earn more than $1 million and went on to produce 213 offspring, including Shuvee, Gold Digger, and Beldale Ball. Nashua was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1965 and was laid to rest at Spendthrift Farm in 1982.
