John Velazquez Discusses Kentucky Derby Contender Outwork
Q: Tell us about Outwork?
A: Well there’s not much other than that he thinks he’s the biggest horse in the race. He’s done everything he’s been asked so far.
Q: Can you describe him temperament wise?
A: He’s actually very nice and laid back. But you can’t say that once he’s in a race. He really starts running and gets into it. Beforehand he’s calm and handles the post parade very good. He handles noise and crowds well so he should be good for the Derby.
Q: How do you feel about your post position?
A: I think it’s great. He’s has some speed to come out. If he breaks on the lead and goes for it I’m definitely not going to discourage him. I’ll let him do what he feels is comfortable. If he’s on the lead and someone wants to take it they’ll have to get by him. He’s quick enough I think he’ll be either one, two or three going into the first turn.
Q: Do you have any concerns?
A: No not too much. He has the ability to do whatever you ask. The only question is the mile and a quarter and the speed of the race.
Q: How does he feel when you’re on him? How’s his stride?
A: He’s great. He wants to get going and he’s very smooth. He catches up very quickly and he’s on the bridle the second he’s out of the gate. He’s got a big stride and he’s a long horse, but he’s very quick and athletic.
Q: Can you tell us about the Wood Memorial?
A: It was a fast race and he got a little tired. He had to do a lot quickly but I’m proud of what he did.
