Jockey Notes: Corey Lanerie on Weep No More & Mo Tom
May 4th, 2016
Q: Tell us about your trip in the Louisiana Derby on Mo Tom…
A: Everything was really really good, we had a really nice trip right up until the 3/16 pole when I was behind horses that were stopping. Nothing seemed to open, to be honest with you I don’t know how I ended up on the rail. Everything started going wrong at once.
Q: In the risen star Mo Tom had some trouble as well but when you got him clear, he had a great late kick. Do you think Mo Tom can go a mile and quarter and still give the same closing speed.
A: I think so just because in all those races I’ve hit traffic at the 3/16. He wants to sit back and relax and going a mile and a quarter should allow him to do that. When you call on him, he’s there. He’s galloped out so good. I think he’ll get it easily.
Q: He seems like a very patient horse and very willing please. Does he feel that way when you ride him?
A: Yes, he’s very relaxed but when you call upon him he responds. In the Louisiana Derby, I asked him to slow down he was heavy on the bit. He gets a lot of momentum and it’s hard for him to come back.
Q: Do you have any concerns about post position for him?
A: Not really because of his running style but ideally I would have liked to be between the 6 and 8 position, but the 4 should be fine. I’m going to be looking to save ground on the first turn.
Q: You’re riding Weep No More in the Kentucky Oaks. Can you tell me about your last race?
A: I rode her like we were just out breezing. I let her run her race and it worked out really well.
Q: Can you tell me about her personality and any concerns you have about the contenders she may face?
A: I’m the most concerned about the trip she’ll get – same as Mo Tom. They’re both come from behind horses. You kind of have to get lucky. She’ll have to get the pace and a clear trip.
