I have lost count of how many times I have been asked “Why don’t you just sell your pony?”. It’s been argued that I have already aged out of ponies, I’m being held back in riding, among other things. True, from the business aspect, refusing to sell a horse isn’t very smart. Refusing to sell a pony, however, is even less smart. If I sold Rita, I could easily use the money to buy myself a new prospect horse, maybe even something to take me to the top. So whats the problem?
The problem is, I will not sell that pony. I bought her as an unwanted, starved, abused little mutt. The only way I can be totally sure that she will not end up like that again is to simply keep her for as long as she lives. She has the step and the scope to not only take out horse strides, but add three whenever i can’t see the distance. I can event her, practice high level dressage, fox hunt, trail ride, run barrels, cut cattle: the possibilities are endless. If I want another horse, I’m willing to work for it from scratch the way I did with Rita. She is a once in a lifetime ride and there is no way i will let her go. Call me selfish, silly, and ridiculous. I call myself lucky to have that amazing little pony in my life.
