Bred in Kentucky by Helen Alexander and owned by Kaleem Shah Inc., Bayern is a graded stakes winner with quite the impressive pedigree. Debuting as a 3-year-old in January of 2014, he showed much potential and quickly moved into graded stakes races with the big boys. Just three weeks following a disqualification in the Derby Trial Stakes, the bay colt gave the Preakness Stakes a shot, but ran into some trouble immediately leaving the gate when Ria Antonia jumped in front of him; derailing what many believed would have been a great run. As for his running style, the leggy colt is a front runner that will fight to set the pace — a trait that backfired on him in the Travers Stakes. Though his past performances suggest he is more of a sprinter, Bayern lead a wire to wire victory in this year’s Haskell Invitational, leaving spectators at Monmouth Park speechless.
